Cycling medics to be deployed at major events on Jersey

ST John Ambulance officers will use bicycles to respond to emergencies at major events next year where ambulances can’t get through crowds.
The service has announced that it will create a cycle response unit – with officers carrying defibrillators – using money donated by the Sir James Knott Trust, lawyer firm Viberts and an anonymous donor.

The special bikes will have panniers containing first aid and lifesaving equipment and are designed to be used when ambulances are restricted because of large crowds or obstructions.

Jane Allan, the commissioner of operations, said that the new unit would improve safety for Islanders at events.

Nut politiebikers in buitengebied bewezen

Robocop fighting for his life!

The policeman dubbed Robocop after collaring a record-breaking 309 criminals in a year was last night fighting for his life after being mowed down by a hit-and-run driver.
Constable Diederik Coetzee, who patrols his neighbourhood on a mountain bike, was off-duty when he was knocked from his saddle after being hit from behind.
Colleagues were yesterday investigating the possibility that the 54-year-old was deliberately targeted by one of the hundreds of crooks he has arrested.

The beat officer was wearing a high-visibility vest and his bicycle had its lights on when he was hit by a car which failed to stop on Friday night.
PC Coetzee won a formal citation in 2005 when he clocked up 309 arrests by October – beating the previous annual arrest record for a single officer of 305, held by a Northumbria dog handler, with two months to spare.

His final arrest tally for 2005 stood at 366, but at the end of the calendar year it emerged he had been trumped by Carlisle PC Gerard ‘Mac’ Maguire, who had made 369 ‘collars’.
PC Coetzee responded by vowing to beat 400 in 2006 – and won back his record by clocking up an amazing 404 arrests during that year.
The PC also spoke of his ‘very high energy levels’ which had seen him complete 12 ‘Iron Man’ events and added that he relaxed by ‘cycling, running and canoeing’.

Many of PC Coetzee’s arrests were carried out while he was patrolling the tough Ladywood estate in Mansfield on his mountain bike.

From red-light runners to drug dealers, Edinburgh’s bicycle police have it covered

It’s 10am on the Meadows and I’ve joined them on one of their regular patrols.
They’ve no sirens or blinding livery but as our red-light jumper discovers, they’re a stealth force to be reckoned with.

This time it was only a minor infringement, a red-faced cyclist and a £30 on-the-spot fine, but it’s not just petty offenders that the two-wheeled St Leonard’s enforcers have put the brakes on.
They can also boast of cornering hardened criminals before the squad cars have even arrived.

In one recent case the unit came to the aid of two off-duty officers who had witnessed a drug deal in Panmure Place off the Meadows. “We got the call saying two officers had witnessed this guy making a deal and when they confronted him he’s gone berserk,” says Pc Bell, 40, a Lothian and Borders Police veteran of 15 years and who trains the bike unit at the station.
“Although we were right across the Meadows we cut straight across the grass and got there first to find this guy rolling around on the pavement with the two officers. The squad cars had to drive around the park and didn’t get there until after us.

“That’s a relatively rare incident, but it shows the benefits of two wheels.”

Of all of the benefits the bikes offer, stealth is among the most valued. The officers barely stand out from other cyclists, which comes in handy.
“To me the best thing about patrolling on bike is having that element of surprise,” says Pc Harman, 34, who joined the force four years ago after 12 years with the military police. “In the summer you get problems with under-age drinking on the Meadows. If we were in a patrol car they’d see us coming, but with the bikes they don’t know you’re there until you tap them on the shoulder.

“It also means you catch a lot of motorists on their mobiles.”
There are, as we discovered on our early morning chase, downsides to not being noticed.
“It can be quite tricky to get someone’s attention. We don’t have lights or a siren, and it’s hardly like we can go ‘woo woo woo’.

“There was one instance when I had to chase a fruit and veg van for about a mile because its back doors were wide open but they couldn’t see me.”
Lothian and Borders Police set up its first cycle unit in 2006 to patrol the city centre, and has since established units to cover Drylaw, Granton, Leith and the Water of Leith. The St Leonard’s unit covers parts of the Old Town and the Southside and has a range of responsibilities. It also covers the Meadows, Newington, and the leafy suburbs of Marchmont, Bruntsfield and Morningside.

Pc Bell and Pc Harman – part of the ten-strong team at St Leonard’s – deal with all aspects of policing, but in particular focus on fellow cyclists breaking the law. Infringements of cycling legislation might not sound like a priority for police, but there is considerable public demand that it be robustly enforced. Recent figures showed the unit handed out 30 fines in just two months, stopping and cautioning far more.

Pc Bell says: “We sat down with councillors and community groups to ask what they would like to us to focus on, and antisocial cycling was among the main issues.
“We stopped one professional guy on his way to work just the other week who said ‘if I stopped at every light from my home to work that would be 40 stops’. He was missing the point.”

Missing the point is clearly what a number of cyclists do.
The force has rolled out the cycle units for recent campaigns, including last month.

A total of 247 cyclists were stopped by officers and given advice for a number of issues including red-light offences, cycling on pavements and bike security/safety. A further 152 were issued with information on visibility.

Ambulance service comes in for praise in Qatar

FIRST-AID providers on bicycles are ready to reach crowded areas in Doha with Hamad Medical Corporation launching the new Bike Emergency Service.“In the initial stage they will be stationed from 5pm to midnight at the Corniche, Rumaillah Park and Souq Waqif, areas which are crowded, especially during weekends,” an official of Hamad Medical Corporation’s Emer-gency Medical Services said yesterday.

The well-trained personnel would provide emergency first aid to those in need prior to the arrival of an ambulance to rush patients to the Accident and Emergency Department.

The bikes are equipped with a first-aid bag for the treatment of mild injuries, a heart resuscitation system and an oxygen cylinder. The service could be availed of by dialling 999 and reporting the injury and location of the patient.

“The number of Bike Emergency Service stations is expected to be increased in the near future to cover sports events as well,” the official said.

The new service, which has been running for two weeks now, has been described as “efficient, prompt and timely in providing emergency first aid for a number of cases”.

Battery bikes to power city police in South Africa

eThekwini mayor James Nxumalo has challenged other mayors to make a commitment to riding a bicycle to work at least once a week.
Nxumalo threw down the gauntlet at the launch of an E-Bike battery-powered pilot project yesterday.
Ten electrical bicycles were handed over to the metro police for use in patrolling the Durban beachfront.

“I will be cycling regularly from my home in Pinetown to work at the city hall. I will do my best to do this regularly. I am challenging other mayors in South Africa and internationally to commit themselves as I have,” said Nxumalo. He said the aim of the programme was to test alternative modes of transport for the city, as petrol and diesel contributed to global warming, and bicycles could offer an alternative to the traffic in the city centre, which was a “nightmare”.

The bicycles make use of a lithium ion battery which is rechargeable and provides power for up to 45km.
Carlos Esteves, the deputy head of eThekwini’s Energy Office, said the city would establish more designated cycling routes.
“This programme should encourage people to get out of their cars and enjoy the city and exercise,” said metro policewoman Nompilo Mthethwa.

“It will help us work faster should there be any criminal activities. It’s also environmentally friendly and it motivates me to to keep fit,” she said

Bikepatrol.nl correspondents!

Even on their holidays the correspondents are looking for more information about the bicycle patrols in the World.
Lars sent the greetings with the members of the Brigade VTT of Cannes.

Shetland police took to the beat by pedal power.

Constables Andrew Card and Daniel Whittingham were the first to go on bicycle patrol when they took off down to the Esplanade in the sunshine to check out a problem with one of the traffic lights.
Along with constables Nicola MacAngus and Graham Johnstone they are the first four volunteers in the local force for the new bicyle patrols but more are to join in once they are kitted out.

The two bicycles in service are mountain bike-style built specially for police use with a pannier containing a repair kit and some of the tools of the officers’ trade.

Chief inspector David Bushell said it was the Shetland force’s own decision to introduce bicycles for officers to use in town at certain times, day and night, making them able to cover their beat far quicker than on foot.
He hopes they will be useful for getting into areas like the lanes where police cars cannot go. They will be much in evidence during the Tall Ships Race later this month.
He admitted part of the motivation is to save on fuel costs and make the force more eco-friendly, as well as improving officers’ health.

A Canada Goose knocked a Cincinnati police officer off of his bike.

A Cincinnati police lieutenant who was out riding a bike on patrol through the Jordan Crossing strip mall Friday evening reportedly was ambushed by a male Canada goose protecting its mate and their nest, somehow knocking him from his bike and into a plate-glass window, seriously cutting his arm.

Lt. Michael Savard’s injuries required stitches, but he was expected to be released from the hospital Friday night, said Cincinnati police Capt. Jeff Butler, though Butler said he did not have details about how he was injured.

Jordan Crossing security guard Orlando Smith said he was informed the lieutenant had been attacked by a goose, which this time of year can generally be found standing on the roof of the single-story strip mall, keeping a watchful eye on individuals who might bother his mate and their nest, which she built in a square planter in the center of the open-air strip mall.

Police officers in north Cumbria will be using specially-adapted bicycles when they go out on the beat.

The 20 modified mountain bikes branded with the Cumbria force's livery will be used in Carlisle, Penrith, Appleby and Brampton.
The idea is they are more effective than cars in areas with passageways, pedestrian areas and parks.
It is hoped using the bikes will help officers tackle anti-social behaviour and criminal damage.
They will be used by officers who would usually be on foot patrol and have been adapted to carry equipment such as speed capture devices.
PCSO Tony Labram said: "Using a bike means I can gain quick access to areas not possible in a car, such as parks and passages, which is important when you're working in town centres or large residential areas. "It also means I can cover my patch more quickly than if I were on foot, meaning I'm more accessible to the local community."

The London Ambulance cycle response unit fact's!!

Facts about the Cycle Response Unit:

  • 400,000 miles travelled (16 times round the earth) in 10 years
  • £150k on fuel saved
  • Over 400 tonnes of CO2 not produced
  • Over 50,000 patients seen
  • £1.3m saved by the Service on using cycle responders every year
  • Over 20,000 ambulance journeys saved

Originally piloted in July 2000 with a single cycle medic treating patients in the West End, the team has expanded over the last decade to a rota of over 100 staff covering the City of London, Hammersmith, Shepherd’s Bush, Kensington, Notting Hill, Bloomsbury, St Pancras, Canary Wharf, all five terminals at Heathrow Airport and at large-scale outdoor events.

Over the years cycle response unit (CRU) staff have treated around 50,000 patients and travelled over 400,000 miles on duty: equivalent to more than 16 times round the circumference of Earth.

CRU Operations Manager Tom Lynch MBE, who came up with the idea 10 years ago and was the first cycle medic (below right), said: “It’s great to see that all the hard work we’ve put in over the last decade has meant more and more patients are receiving emergency medical care more quickly.

“What started out as an idea to reach patients faster in central London traffic is now attending thousands of 999 emergency calls a year.
We get interest from all over the world, as other big cities want to use our model too.

'Stealth' nature of bike patrols let get their perps'

Typically a summer initiative, the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP in Canada just couldn't seem to park their two-wheelers this winter, electing instead to continue regular rounds. "We still continue to get very good feedback on our bicycle patrol and we've kept it active,"
Insp. Kevin Hewco told North Cowichan council on Feb. 16.

Whether they were looking to firm up or not, two officers are getting more svelte as the months wear on, as their duties require them to cycle the streets at least one shift each week.
"Our members really enjoy that activity," Hewco said. North Cowichan Mayor Tom Walker believes it.
One "rainy stormy afternoon" not too long ago he saw the Mounties on their bikes.
"I stopped and had a chat with them and said 'I really appreciate that you're doing what you're doing on a day like this.
It's not a day I would have enjoyed it,' and they both seemed to say 'it keeps us fit and we kind of enjoy it.'

The benefit to biking isn't limited to trimming the tummies of their riders either -- it's actually efficient.
Hewco called them "stealth," and proactive. "We catch more people in back alleys dealing dope or sneaking around houses on bikes than we ever do with cars," he said.
Walker said he's not surprised. "They are pretty sneaky on bikes. I can spot your big white cars but your bikes kind of sneak up on me and other folks too
so I guess it's kind of effective," said the mayor.

Singapore's CERT Bike Team starts with a Bang!!

AN "EXPLOSION" in Yishun Street 81 prompted the evacuation of 42 residents from Block 846 yesterday morning.
Thankfully, it was just part of an exercise called Blockstar, which simulated a fire in a Housing Board flat.
Members of Nee Soon South constituency's new roving Community Emergency Response Team (Cert) bicycle patrol team, or Cert-On-Patrol, were the first to arrive and helped guide residents to safety.

At the Nee Soon South C2E (Community Emergency and Engagement) event held nearby, Ms Lee Bee Wah, a Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC, stressed the need for Singaporeans to stick together and exercise "good neighbourliness" during emergencies or disasters - especially those that occur in the densely populated heartland.

The constituency's Cert-On- Patrol was launched yesterday, and is the first here to have members ride bicycles equipped with emergency rescue kits that hold fire extinguishers, medical supplies and automated external defibrillators.
The patrol is made up of resident volunteers who are trained in first aid and fire-fighting.

SEVEN cyclists trained in first aid are now on the roads to help handle emergencies in Worcester, UK.

They attended a first aid for cyclists course run by the All-Terrain Bike Response Units/Search and Rescue (ATBRU), which runs the ambulance mountain bikes that have been making an appearance around the city in recent months.
The four-week course was held at the Pump House Environment Centre in Waterworks Road, Barbourne, in December.

The seven are from cycling clubs across Worcestershire and all passed the specialist course, which gives them a unique set of skills to help them cope with first aid emergencies on the road.
They will now be on call seven days a week, 24 hours a day to support ATBRU when they are needed in emergency situations.

Leigh Robinson, team leader of ATBRU, said: “Our aim is to be part of the new big society agenda.
"We feel free courses like this will encourage people to play their part in the big society movement within Worcestershire.”

ATBRU is currently recruiting people to join the team as medical responders.
Each volunteer will receive free professional standard training as part of the role.
